Haiti shares two thirds of the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Sea and is situated just south of Grand Turk and is east of Cuba. Haiti was originally a Spanish colony and then later a French colony and is the first country in Latin America to become independent and is the only country to be formed from a successful rebellion by slaves which at the time was the majority of the population. Haiti has the dubious and unfortunate distinction of being the poorest country in the western hemisphere.
Haiti is primarily a mountainous island, with very little forests left after rampant deforestation and has left substantial soil erosion issues and a lackluster agricultural base. Run off from the bare land threatens the amazing reef systems which surround Haiti, but on the positive side, Haiti is blessed with some the best beaches in the Caribbean.
Despite all the political strife, poor economy and dismal future, Haitians are extremely talented artisans, and have a vibrant and flourishing arts scene. The depictions of Caribbean life are second to none and Haiti remains one of our favorite locations to obtain original art work and handicrafts in the Caribbean.
